Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan: Different country, different nation

Ed Joyce played for England in the world cup 2007 and Eoin Morgan wore Irish Jersey at the same year in the Caribbean. Four years later, during the World Cup 2011, Morgan played for England and Joyce represented Ireland.

Fantasy Cricket World Cup History – 5 Controversial Moments

None of the big events is complete without its fair share of controversy. World Cup fantasy cricket is no exception.

Almost every world cup cricket match has brought heaps of big and small controversies for the cricket loving fans of 11wickets.com, the trusted fantasy cricket platform of India.

The world cup fantasy league is among the most watched cricketing tournaments around the world. While it enthrals the followers, they also get to watch a number of controversies each edition.

We take a glance at a few of the top controversies in Fantasy Cricket World Cup game so far.

South Africa’s heart-breaking modified target in 1992

South African cricketers were playing their first World Cup in 1992, and they were very well on their length of reaching the final. But, the disruption during their semis tie against England turned their luck the wrong way up. They needed 22 off 13 when rain cut off the game, and then the target was adjusted to 22 off just 1 ball. Without a doubt, a heart-breaking end!

Crowd protest at Eden Gardens in 1996

Indian fans have usually been passionate about cricket as a sport. But, their love occasionally takes a chaotic turn. The 1996 semi-final at Eden Gardens between India and Sri Lanka did find a similar story, as Indian team was on the brink of defeat.

India observed a collapse, as fans began pelting bottles to the ground and set seats on fire, leading to Lanka being awarded the game.

Hansie Cronje’s earpiece during 1999

Former South African captain Hansie Cronje had always been involved with controversy. In the 1999 World Cup match against India, Cronje had been discovered by Sourav Ganguly wearing an earpiece when fielding, apparently taking suggestions from Coach Bob Woolmer.

While there was no law about the same, Ganguly reported it to the umpires, who, after discussion with the match referee, got it taken off.

Shane Warne banned in 2003

Shane Warne was unquestionably Australia’s most prolific spinner. He was also in his leading form during the 2003 World Cup. But, right before the event, he tested positive for a banned compound. Consequently, he was banned from international cricket for a year, thereby forcing him to miss out the World Cup.

Nevertheless, it hardly had any effect as Australia won the trophy.

Bob Woolmer’s death in 2007

Pakistan had a forgetful campaign in the 2007 World Cup, having been ousted from the group stage. A day after their defeat to Ireland, coach Woolmer was discovered dead in his room at the team hotel. While preliminary investigations alleged foul play, carrying out a further long investigation, it was figured that he had died of natural causes.

This remains one of the greatest controversies.

Fantasy World Cup – 5 Changes in World Cup Cricket after 2015

We all have gone through Darwin’s Theory in our schools.  Things have to adapt and survive the changes they go through. Cricket playing nations have gone through many changes in the sport.  Cricket happens to be one of the best inventions of human.  Now cricket has been around the world for over a century and a half. However, ever since, the world cup fantasy game championship has been introduced; cricket has been continuously changing and modifying.

The last World Cup was played in 2015 which saw Australia becoming only the second team in the history to win the World Cup on own soil. Plenty of things have changed since the last CWC fantasy cricket in 2015.

Let us take a look at how the fantasy world cup has evolved ever since 2015:

Number of test teams

In 2015, the number of test playing nation was 10. Gradually after that year, the international council granted test status to more teams. Afghanistan and Ireland got this status and the number of test playing nations increased to 12.

4 formats in cricket

Cricket till 2015 world cup fantasy cricket match had only 3 formats – Test, ODI and T20. But, with the birth of T10 league cricket fans has now got a new format to enjoy. So far, T10 format is the shortest, which has both the teams play 10 overs each. The match finishes within 2 hours and promises the cricket frenzy fans of 11Wickets.com a fantastic experience. The first T10 league has been played in 2017.

England as No 1 ODI team

During the world cup 2015, Bangladesh ousted England from the group stage. England’s performance in ODI had been questioned.  However, the team has improved a great deal in the past few years and is now the no.1 ODI team in the world.

Afghanistan Cricket team position

Afghanistan ranked outsiders in the world cup fantasy league2015. However, now they have the potential to beat any team of the world on any given day. They had defeated the Sri Lankan team in the Asia Cup, upset the Bangladesh team. They also came close to defeat Pakistan while almost won a match against India a few months ago. The cricketers of the Afghanistan team are no longer what they were in 2015.

Significance of leg spinners

The leg-spinners have become a vital part of ODI cricket matches. And hence, each and every international team has at least one or two leg spinners in the squad. This was certainly not the case in the world cup 2015. Earlier the finger spinners and pacers have been considered to be superior to the leg spinners to play in a match.

This post takes a look at South Africa’s journey in the Fantasy World Cup cricket game. Big match underperformers or just plain unlucky, our readers will decide at the end.

World Cup 1992

This had the first time South Africa partaken in a world cup fantasy cricket match, after being returned as a Test playing nation in 1991. South Africans had been banned from international cricket from 1970 due to apartheid. The cricketers began playing ODI in 1991 and no one expected much from the team. However, they surprised all by qualifying for Semi-Finals, by winning 5 of their 8 matches in Round Robin WC stage.

In the Semi-Final against England, they needed 22 runs from 13 balls to win and expected to win as well. However, rain and 10-minute delay to the game ruined their chances. They got a revised target of scoring 21 runs from 1 ball. England won the match easily, thus ending the South African journey.

World Cup 1996

Team Proteas started strong during World Cup1996. They won all 5 matches and topped the group which had South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, UAE, England & Netherlands. Their dominant performance in the ODI fantasy world cup led many to believe that the year was of South Africa. But unfortunately, they had been eliminated in Quarter Finals by West Indies.

World Cup 1999

In 1999, the Proteas started as a strong team and topped its Group. They won 4 of their 5 matches and qualified for the semi-finals. In the semi-final match against Australia, the fans saw a tie between both the teams as they scored 213. However, Australia had defeated South Africa in the Super Six Stage and hence qualified for the Finals. The match is remembered for the last over miscommunication between Allan Donald and Lance Klusener. Donald remained at his crease while Klusenertried a run. If that run was taken South Africa would have reached the finals for the first time.

World Cup 2003

During this fantasy cricket world cup match, team South Africa performed the worst. They had been eliminated in the Group stage itself as they won just 3 out of their 6 matches.

World Cup 2007

South Africa qualified for the Super Eight Stage and came second in the Group Stage. They narrowly made it to the Semi-Finals by coming fourth in the Super Eight Stage. The Semi-Final saw them lose to Australia and thus not reaching the final again.

World Cup 2011

2011 saw the Proteastopping the Group Stage. South Africa was the only team to defeat the eventual winners of the tournament, India. In the Quarter-Finals, they restricted New Zealand to 221 runs from 50 Overs. This time it looked like that South Africa would reach the next round. But again the Curse of Big Matches struck as they were bundled off for 172 runs.

World Cup 2015

South African team again had a good start, coming second in the Group stage by winning 4 of their 6 matches. They defeated Sri Lanka in the Quarter Finals, chasing down their total of 133 in 18 overs. South Africa failed to clear the Semi-Final hurdle for the fourth time when they lost to New Zealand.
