Have you ever wondered how the third umpire sees a cricket match? Or have you wondered how the decision of a third umpire will affect your fantasy cricket game at 11wickets App?
A few decisions just can’t be taken by umpires on the field during an online fantasy cricket match. That is where a third umpire becomes an advantage. He is the overlord. Soon after taking his time, with the press of a button, he can break a million hearts or offer booming hope.
We all believe how things head on down at the cricket field and on televisions sets.
- The first thing is that the fielding team makes an appeal.
- The on field umpire draws a box in the air to attract the third umpire.
- And then the decision goes upstairs to the third umpire.
Millions of fantasy cricket fans at the stadium and gluing to the television set hold their breath, cross their fingers and after what precisely may seem like an eternity, the light on the board glows. Depending on the colour, we praise or curse the 3rd umpire.
Well, that is what we as the cricket fan see and understand this side of the story. But how is it for the man behind the button? How exactly does he see the game? How exactly does he try to make his decisions?
For, the technology was announced in November, 1992 during a Test match between India & South Africa.
Strangely enough, Sachin Tendulkar was the first batsman to be given out applying television replay. And in those days, green colour light signal meant out!
Lack of technology
But clearly, the technology was not as ‘advanced’ back in the day.
Little by little, it evolved, and from merely determining run outs, the 3rd umpire had to even evaluate if the ball had cleared the ropes when a fielder dove in for saving a boundary. Or whether the ball cleared for a six or remained in the field.
These people were also given the duty to determine if a catch was cleanly taken.
In addition to these decisions, 3rd umpires have to take decisions for no balls as well. The truth is, that is something they need to check each and every time, unless there is a run out decision to be taken.
And right after the 3rd umpire got more support via the Hotspot and Snickometer. Although he was burdened with deciding caught-behind conundrums.
The roll-out of Hawkeye places the responsibility of Leg Before Wicket decisions on 3rd umpire as well. Not that the technology was not beneficial.
After that Decision Review System (DRS) took place and teams could in fact overturn decisions. Once again, the power went into the hands of the 3rd Umpire.
And simply from a single small screen in 1992, the 3rd umpire’s small little room now looks a little like a big hall with numerous monitors where every angle of the field is shown by the cameras installed for the scrutiny of the 3rd umpires.
