Major American Football Positions and Their Importance

If you’re not an ardent fan of football and have not played the game ever in your life, then determining the positions of the players can be tough. Why are the players scattered all over the field? Who is the quarterback? Who is standing in the offensive and defensive position? Although to play online fantasy football, you don’t need to have so much field knowledge. However, knowing the same will help you draft the right team for playing fantasy football.  

In American football the position of the player is determined based on whether the player is playing offensive or defensive in nature. But not all players are suitable for the same type of positions. Some might be good defenders, while others may be offensive! Depending on the past record make your selection for the online fantasy football league.  

Here’s a small recap of the most common American football positions that you’ll notice in every game.  

Center:

 This is the position where the individual passes the ball to the quarterback and handles the ball all through out the game.  

Quarterback:

This is the most important position to look for. In simple words he is the leader of the game and instructs and manages the whole team by throwing the ball and passing it from hand to hand. So, if you don’t select the right one for the online fantasy football league, then be confident to lose the game.  

Running back

When the quarterback hands the ball, this is the player who runs with the football. In normal American football, they are also called by names like tailback, halfbacks and rushers. So, mostly the players standing right in the line behind the quarterbacks are the running backs.  

Wider receiver

Thinking about this position will make you feel that this is not the important position to look out for. However, players playing in this position needs to be speedy and quick so that they can bypass the defenders and catch the ball. So, be very selective while playing fantasy football.  

Cornerback

They are the ones who are found in the wider parts of the field. Their job is to stand in front of the wide receiver and guard them as much possible. They are some of the most important people on the field since they are the ones who will be taking acre pf the defense part.  

Defensive end

Standing right at the end of the defensive line, they are the ones whose main job is to rush pass the other team’s players and help to score the goal. Without a good defensive end, the points in the score board of your fantasy football games will go down drastically.  

Defensive tackle

They are the two players standing strong in the inner end of the defensive line. If you wonder their main job, then be sure that they help the quarterback and disrupts the backfield formation.  

Safety:

 The players positioned extremely farthest from the offensive side of the ball is known as either the free safety or strong safety. Although both the safety players don’t have the same role on the field. However, more or less both are important for the game.
