Early Days of Cricket Helmet

“Necessity is the mother of invention” – Plato (the ancient Greek philosopher)

Cricket is no different!!

We play fantasy cricket games today where we need no protective gears! But years ago, batsmen had to face the fast bowlers without any protection. Since there were no bouncer limits then, it was really a ‘do or die’ situation for the batsmen. And then there were scenarios where tail-enders was always greeted at the crease with fast bouncers going past their chin or missing their ear by a whisker. Batsmen nowadays are indeed lucky.

Helmets were first used in baseball. In 1905, Frank Mogridge created the first crude protective head gear.” In cricket, there are instances where players used towels, scarves and padded caps to protect themselves from the hard cricket ball. In the 1930s, the first player to use a protective hat was Patsy Hendren. He designed it himself. However, it took 40 more years for helmets to be used on a more regular basis. In the 1970s, helmets were seen in World Series Cricket to be used by a lot of players. The first player to use helmet consistently was Dennis Amiss.

Former English captain Mike Brearly also used helmets of his own design. However, another former English batsman Tony Greig had the opinion that they would make cricket more dangerous by encouraging bowlers to bounce the batsmen. Those days, rules of cricket were not biased towards batsmen like they are now. So bowlers were allowed to bowl as many bouncers as they wanted.

First to wear helmet

The first player to wear a helmet in a Test match was Graham Yallop of Australia on 17 March, 1978, when playing against West Indies at Bridgetown. One the reasons could have been the four lethal fast bowlers that West Indies had in the 1970s. But it was English batsman Dennis Amiss who made it popular in Test cricket.

In the early days, the helmets did not have protective grills. So although the head was safe, players were always in risk to get injured in the face. Modern helmets have strong protective grills to prevent balls from hitting the face. In modern cricket, all batsman wear helmets against fast bowlers. Sometimes few players select not to wear them while facing spin bowlers.

To protect the young players, in Under-19 cricket it is compulsory for all batsmen and any fielder within 15 yards (14 m) of the bat to wear helmets. Recently, in the fourth test between India and England, Stuart Broad suffered a broken nose when the ball went past the grill and hit him. He was seen batting with double protective grill in the next match.

Australian cricketer, Ricky Ponting, used this for the first time in 2005 against the English team. But such type of bat was subsequently banned by the ICC because it felt that the bat gave undue advantage to the batsman and not all players could afford such bats.

Numerous such slight variations in the bats have followed since and some were for pure marketing gimmicks. Some alterations have been implemented though.

We know that many of you are aware of the history of cricket. However, many of you aren’t. So we have brought to you a short history of the cricket sports, knowing which will make your online fantasy cricket match more interesting to play.

The first mention

The first exact mention of “Creckett as it used to be called” was in 1598. Mentioned at a Royal Grammar School, in Guilford. This is the earliest recording of the sport.

Another recorded example of the sport was back in 1624 when a player called Jasper Vinall died. He was playing the sport during the local Parish matches in Sussex. Jasper was hit in the head by the Batsman Edward Tye as Edward tried to hit the ball for a second time to prevent him from being caught out. In 1774 a law was introduced to stop the batsman from being able to hit the ball twice.

Further into the 18th century there were more laws brought in like the LBW – Leg before wicket and 3 stumped wickets.

Early 19th century

The 19th century brought in over arm bowling. Towards the end of the 19th Century cricket was well known throughout North America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India.

Cricket really took off in 1963 when counties in England introduced the Limited Over’s Rule. This then led on to stage the First Limited over’s cricket world cup in 1975.

Cricket bats have really transformed over time as well, the original shape resembled a hockey stick which was very thin and have a slight curve at the end. The modern day cricket bat is made out of Kashmir or English White Willow; the best quality would be the English Willow. In the manufacturing process, the bat gets treated with raw Linseed oil this helps protect the bat from weathering. White Willow is used in the making of cricket bats because it is very tough and shock resistant; the wood will not splinter either when struck at high speed for example by a cricket ball. White willow is also very lightweight. This new bat design which comes with a spring design where the cane handle meets the blade was invented by Charles Richardson back in the 1880’s.

The blade itself, is flat at the front with the back of the blade being pointed, this helps make the bat lighter, making it easier to manoeuvre but, still giving strength at the middle of the bat, where the ball will be strike.

Though it is similar to the traditional cricket game to quite an extent, there are peculiar modifications drawn in it.

These modifications have introduced owing to the changes in the rules and format of the game. A regular T20 cricket game must be completed in three hours. And every inning lasts for around 75-90 minutes and a 10-20-minute interval. In one innings, each of the bowlers can bowl a highest of 4 overs out of total 20 overs.

The format of a Twenty20 match is quite similar to normal limited overs match. Only the batting overs reduced to twenty, just as the name of the format suggests. There cannot be a tie in a T20 cricket game. If a T20 match ends in a tie, it breaks with a one over per side – ‘Eliminator’ or ‘Super Over’.

In T20 cricket games if the fielding team does not begin to bowl their 20th over within 75 minutes, the bowling side is penalized with extra six runs for every whole over bowled after the 75-minute mark. No more than five fielders can be on the leg side at any time.

Don’t always choose your favourites. This is the golden rule of any fantasy game. Even if you may love the way your preferred player can smash a ton or take wickets when he’s at leisure.

If they’re going through a bumpy patch it isn’t a great thought selecting them in your starting dream 11 fantasy league team.

Rule Two

Do your research. It goes without telling. If you wish your team to win, research the players. It might be a bit of a intimidating idea finding out players that you have never heard of, but can almost find about a player in the internet.

Just type the name of the player you want to know more about in you search engine. See how they’ve done in their latest match, and write down your belief on what kind of form they’re in.

Rule Three

Look out for trading deadlines. You’ve got a terrific talented team. You are already bragging about how your team is going to win effortlessly. But have you truly chosen the right team?

In fantasy cricket, you really don’t know, but checking what teams are playing is vital to a winning campaign. Be wise with your trades.

Rule Four

Go with your gut. A player is going through a bit of a slouch in form. Your mates are trading him in for some unfamiliar wonder kid who’s just scored a 100 on debut. You think about selling him but for certain reason can’t. Why? As you have a gut feeling!

Rule Five

Check your team every day. Now you might say, “I’ve got better and more vital things to do” however when you look at how much moment you have in a day, if you can take a highest of 15 minutes just to see how your players are doing. You will be awfully successful in your choices.

So they’re just a few of the rules to a successful, or a pretty polite, fantasy cricket team. We hope these rules help you in your quest for online cricket game.
